Development of a methodology for the systemic description of urban energy systems

The energy system of buildings is undergoing changes in supply and demand. One can observe an increase in on-site renewable energy generation as well as electricity being used for heating. This results in an increasing number of interactions between buildings themselves and the surrounding energy system. Due to these changes buildings should no longer be evaluated as isolated systems. Instead several buildings should be concatenated to an urban energy system and be evaluated as one system.

In this thesis a methodology for the systemic description of urban energy systems is developed. The methodology is a tool for the analysis of interdependencies and influences in a city district arising from the changes in the structure of the energy system. The description of the methodology is subdivided as follows: First, the basic steps, which precede the implementation of the methodology, are explained. Next, the criteria describing the interdependencies within the urban energy system are presented. Afterwards criteria to examine the link between the city district and the superior energy system are introduced. Finally, criteria describing the mutual dependencies between the urban and the national energy system are explained. To validate the methodology’s feasibility it is applied to Forschungszentrum Jülich as an example district. Simultaneously, the implementation provides results on the systemic behavior of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

By applying the methodology to Forschungszentrum Jülich it is verified that the calculation of the criteria used to describe the systemic behavior is feasible. Furthermore, it is shown that due to its modular structure the implementation of the methodology in different urban energy systems can be easily accomplished. Thus, this thesis provides the foundation for an easily applicable, forward-looking systemic valuation methodology for existing city districts.
