Journal article on modelling thermal energy storages in optimization programs


Several approaches for modelling thermally stratified storage units in mixed integer linear programs were compared in a peer-reviewed journal article at "Energy and Buildings".

Thermal storage units are commonly simplified to have a homogeneous internal temperature in mixed-integer linear programs. In this article, approaches for modelling thermal stratification that develops naturally in real thermal storage units are presented and compared. The results indicate that the simplified model overestimates the storage unit's thermal capability and as a result the operative costs of the system are underestimated by approx. 6-7%.
