SmartQuart is the first real laboratory of the Energiewende launched today. In July 2019, Federal Minister Altmaier announced the 20 winners in the ideas competition. SmartQuart is the first in a series of real laboratories of the Energy Turnaround with which the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy accelerates the transfer of innovations into practice.
Federal Minister Altmaier: "I am delighted that the first real laboratory of the Energy Turnaround is now starting work. Our Energy Turnaround real laboratories are innovation projects on an industrial scale. We develop and test technologies that we need for our ambitious energy and climate policy goals and test them in the real laboratories of the energy system transformation under real conditions and on an industrial scale. In the coming weeks and months, we will gradually launch more real laboratories for energy system transformation - throughout Germany and in the regions undergoing structural change".
The consortium for this Living Lab is headed by innogy SE. In addition to the Institute for Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate (EBC) of E.ON ERC, RWTH is also represented by the Institute of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Building (e3d) and the Teaching and Research Field for Real Estate Development (IPE). Other partners from industry and the start-up scene are gridX GmbH, Hydrogenious Technologies GmbH, OFB Projektentwicklung GmbH, RWE Power AG, Bedburg City Council, Kaisersesch Municipality and Viessmann Werke GmbH & Co. KG.
In the SmartQuart real laboratory, smart grid solutions intelligently combine heat, cold, "green" electricity, hydrogen and mobility. The generation and consumption of energy should already be optimised at local level. The central project element is the exchange of energy within and between the districts. The energy carrier hydrogen will play an mportant role in this. Essen and Bedburg in North Rhine-Westphalia and Kaisersesch in Rhineland-Palatinate are the locations of this real laboratory. The concepts should be transferable to other quarters.
