In the SMART Ventilation project, the advantages of mechanical and natural ventilation systems will be brought together through a combined use of both systems. This hybrid ventilation is intended to provide a comfortable indoor climate for an office workplace with the minimal energy consumption.
Traditionally, the ventilation for an office room follows a manually operated window ventilation. This extra simple type of ventilation requires a consistent adjustment of the window position by user, because the ambient conditions such as outdoor temperature and wind cause a change in the outdoor air volume flow. In this way, a steady outdoor air supply will usually not be ensured. An alternative to the natural window ventilation is the mechanical ventilation through controlled supply and exhaust air. The significant advantage of mechanical ventilation is the adjustable air exchange. Thus consistently high air quality and thermal comfort can be guaranteed. However, this advantage will be eliminated at the time when the thermal and olfactory loads of a room are small and can be covered purely by the available natural ventilation. Therefore, SMART (Semi Mechanical AiR Transport) ventilation aims at developing a hybrid ventilation concept in terms of indoor air quality, occupant comfort and energy demand in order to combine the benefits of window ventilation and mechanical ventilation.
The different control strategies and system solutions of the hybrid ventilation will be evaluated according to the energy consumption. For this, a suitable reference standard must be firstly developed. For the energetic evaluation of the hybrid ventilation, a ventilated room is to be considered as a reference. The comparison value would be its final energy demand for delivery, distribution and generation. With this final energy demand and the demand in hybrid ventilation, a new evaluation variable can be developed.
