The building sector offers great potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, both through efficiency measures and through the increased integration of renewable energies. In order to achieve a better coupling of the electricity and heat sector, a higher system understanding is necessary, which can be achieved by intelligent measurement and control systems. However, focusing on individual households and buildings is not enough. Potential for reduction can only be achieved by taking a holistic view of the electricity and heating sector at district level. Communities and local authorities have a pioneering role to play in promoting energy efficiency and climate protection targets at local level. A key element for achieving these goals and the successful implementation and evaluation of measures is precise knowledge of the energy consumption behaviour of whole districts and individual buildings in the districts. However, the energy consumption values for individual buildings are often only available to municipalities in a low time resolution (e.g. annual meter readings). Cloud systems in combination with intelligent measurement systems can contribute to a better understanding of the system and identifying potential savings. Cloud systems already exist which offer different solutions for the acquisition, transmission and evaluation of measurement data. The lack of experience and the resulting financial uncertainties prevent cities and municipalities from investing in cloud systems for collecting and evaluating energy consumption data. Therefore, SUSTAIN Phase 2 aims at demonstrating the financial and energetic added value of these systems through a broad field test of cloud systems in order to demonstrate the economic efficiency of these systems for building owners and operators. Project partners in this project are the city of Bottrop, Emscher Lippe Energie GmbH and E.ON Energy Systems Solutions GmbH.
