On the 9th and 10th of October 2023, the kick-off meeting of the Priority Program (SPP) 2403 "Carnot Batteries: Inverse Design from Market to Molecule" of the German Research Foundation (DFG) took place in Bad Breisig with all participating parties. Within the framework of the SPP, the EBC investigates interactions between heat pumps and thermal storage systems. For this purpose, a scalable virtual test bench is being developed for the integrated design and control of such systems. For more information on the SMOOTH project, please visit our project page. In addition to the EBC, 13 other universities with 16 individual projects are part of the SPP.

The approach of the SPP is a comprehensive inverse top-down design methodology. Starting from the market target variables it aims step by step towards the smaller at the optimal design as well as the optimal modes of operation with its corresponding circuits, storage systems, machines and fluids (molecule) and in turn combines these components in an optimal way. For this purpose, the SPP team is interdisciplinary and strives for cross-disciplinary cooperation.

During the meeting, all individual projects were presented first, so that synergies and cooperation potentials could then be discussed. Hannah Romberg presented the SMOOTH project and parts of the experimental infrastructure of the EBC. Furthermore, Christian Vering took part as one of the two principal investigators. Besides a lively exchange, there was enough time to get to know each other and to go on a hike together. Further information about the SPP and the funded projects can be found on the SPP website.
