MODI: Operating modes as a methodical tool for the planning and realization process of energy systems in buildings and districts


A frequent source of inefficiencies in buildings, which leads to higher energy consumption and higher operating costs, is in the area of building automation, more precisely in the control algorithm and programming. The control programming, which must coordinate the interaction of all systems (in the sense of the energy concept), is of central importance for achieving the goals pursued with the building.

The aim of the MODI project is to develop a method for the control development of building energy systems (BES). The method should enable an immediate transfer of the energy concept into the appropriate control code and thus contribute to the improvement of the planning and realization process of buildings. The method development is geared to practical requirements. The result is a guide that successively guides the planner through the development of the control algorithm solely based on the energy concept. The core of the method is the use of operating modes to structure the control algorithm. Petri nets are considered as a description method, which allow an automated transfer of the control into standard-compliant control code. This method would even allow the specialist planner to develop the control system as early as in the planning stage, to send the fully programmed control system to the construction site and thus to ensure the implementation of the energy concept on the day of commissioning.

The following aspects are considered in the project:

  1. Development method: How can operating modes be methodically derived from the concept and further developed?
  2. Process transparency: How can operating modes contribute to a better understanding and higher transparency of process contexts?
  3. Documentation method : How can operating modes be used to document the conceptual idea and guide through the different phases of the project and operation?
  4. Standard : Can operating modes contribute to a fundamental structuring of control and regulation and support the transfer of innovative control algorithms from research into practice?
