The use of near-surface geothermal energy makes a decisive contribution to the sustainable, low-CO2 HVAC of buildings and quarters. Practical experiences have shown that in many cases, in absence of technical guidelines and personnel expertise, optimal management of the geothermal fields is not achieved. In particular, overheating or overcooling of the soil can result in a considerable loss of efficiency.
In order to better exploit the potentials of existing and future geothermal fields and in particular, to enable their sustainable use, a generic method for the development and implementation of model predictive operating strategies for geothermal fields will be developed. This method will be tested on the geothermal energy supply of the E.ON Energy Research Center and subsequently further developed for any EWS fields. The aim is to close the gap between planning and operation of geothermal probe fields and thus to create the basis for a technical control tool with which near-surface geothermal energy can be optimally integrated into the energy concepts of buildings. This will promote a stronger market penetration of geothermal energy and a cost reduction in the use of geothermal energy throughout the European market.
