Fields of activity
As team leader of the team Urban Energy Systems, Thomas Schreiber is working on the sustainable heating and cooling supply of tomorrow's districts. His particular focus here is on the digitalization of planning and operation-optimization processes. Methods from the fields of thermal network simulation, design- and operation-optimization, cloud-based monitoring systems and algorithms from the field of machine learning are applied in this context. In his role, Thomas Schreiber manages TransUrban.NRW, one of the first "Reallabore der Energiewende", in addition to several other projects. In TransUrban.NRW, all the methods mentioned above come together and are applied in an interdisciplinary consortium from science and industry with the goal to bring the next step of the “Wärmewende” to four real urban districts.
CV
Thomas Schreiber graduated in mechanical engineering from RWTH Aachen University, specializing in energy technology. Before his academic career, he completed an apprenticeship as a construction mechanic. In addition to smaller projects, which he accompanied as an assistant scientist at the Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery and at the Institute for Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate, Thomas Schreiber worked at RheinEnergie AG during his studies. Since 2017, he has been researching topics related to sustainable energy supply for buildings with a focus on automation and digitalization at the Institute for Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate of the RWTH Aachen University. Since December 2020, he is team leader of the team Urban Energy Systems and is working on bringing the digitalization of the planning process and topics around operation-optimization from science to real urban districts.
