Fields of activity
Marco Wirtz develops mathematical optimization models for the design of decentralized urban energy systems. In this field, he focuses on thermally coupled systems with conventional district heating networks and innovative bidirectional ultra low temperature networks (also called 5th generation district heating networks or anergy networks). For model validation, thermo-hydraulic simulation models are used. Furthermore, Mr. Wirtz develops intelligent control algorithms for complex decentralized energy systems based on mathematical optimization.

Marco Wirtz graduated in 2017 with a Master's degree in Energy Engineering with a major in Renewable Energy Engineering from the RWTH Aachen University. During his studies, he worked for six semesters at the Chair of Technical Thermodynamics in teaching and research. He wrote his master thesis at the research center for solar energy of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Almería (Spain) on short-term forecasting systems for solar power plants. Since November 2017, he has been working as a research assistant at the Institute for Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate in the team Urban Energy Systems.
