Cooperation agreement signed for the "National 5G Energy Hub" project
The official launch of the lighthouse project "National 5G Energy Hub" was given on July 19 with the signing of the cooperation agreement. The universities of RWTH Aachen, TU Dresden and the industrial companies Ericsson and Deutsche Telekom are now starting the first project phase of the three-phase project funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy.
Researchers from the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and communications technology are pooling their know-how for the next ten years and are working together towards the goal of making the 5G mobile standard usable for applications in energy technology, with a special reference to building energy technology.

Digitization is one of the big, challenging topics of our time and will affect all areas of life in the future. The media and telecommunications sectors in particular play a pioneering role here. With the introduction of 5G technology in the coming years, new possibilities will be created to make modern radio-based data transmission processes also applicable for classical industries. Energy technology in particular could benefit from this development, as the energy revolution will mean that many small-scale, decentralised plants will have to be integrated into the existing energy infrastructure in future. This leads to a fundamental change in the supply structures from a centrally oriented to a decentralized, cellular supply structure that is regionally oriented and must provide a high degree of flexibility.
Within the framework of Project Phase I, the project partners are dedicated to the structural introduction of radio-based data transmission processes in energy technology. The entire demand chain from the thermally oriented building supply to the electrical distribution network is considered. The core partners are supported by the associated partners E.ON, Techem, the state capital Dresden and the VDZ.
